Today Volvo is known around the world as one of the most iconic brands known for safety, longevity, and its enthusiast following. With a nod to its heritage in alloys, Volvo chose a logo that depicted a ring bisecting at one o’clock. While the Volvo logo looks like the biology symbol for male, it's really the Swedish symbol for Iron. The company was founded back in 1927 by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson as a spin-off from ball-bearing manufacturer SKF. Many may not know this but Volvo in Latin roughly translates to "to roll". We are proud of our Volvo heritage dating back to 1963, a reputation that is unmatched by others in the industry. In 2017, IPD announced that it was the exclusive North American distributor for Genuine Classic Volvo parts. Volvo relies on other high-quality OEM manufactures such as Lemforder, Behr, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Siemens, VDO, Corteco, and many more to maintain its dedication to quality and safety. Our customers should expect the same high-quality when purchasing Genuine Volvo products which in the past were exclusively available as dealer only items. All Volvo supplied Genuine Volvo parts are made to specifications by Volvo and under their strict quality control guidelines. These are the same parts that Volvo used to manufacture your vehicles on the assembly line. A 20A fuse in a domestic 13A plug should never be used.Everything IPD supplies under the " Genuine Volv o" designation are the factory original Volvo parts. The maximum current capacity of a 1.5mm 2 cable is 15A and should be protected by a maximum fuse size of 13A. A standard 13A plug (BS 1363) is designed to fit cables up to a maximum of 1.5mm 2. British wiring regulations allow the use of ring circuits, usually protected by a 30A fuse or 32A breaker, and as such the plug is required to incorporate a fuse to protect the appliance cable. Identifying substandard electrical equipment is becoming an important part of the inspection process and is something that we cover in our courses. In comparison with a 13A fuse wire, it’s considerable larger. The fuse wire is a flat tape rather than round wire. Without this filling material, the air within the fuse expands as the fuse wire melts and arcs, causing the fuse to explode, as demonstrated in our previous article on fake fuses. The sand is required to control the breaking operation of the fuse. Surprisingly the fuse does contain the sand filling required, most counterfeit fuses do not have any filling. Sand filling also contained a blob of solder! The diameter of the of the end cap measures 6.05mm and does not meet BS 1362 either. A plug top fuse should have a length of between 25.0 - 26.2 mm. A genuine BS1362 fuse has the internal wire connected to an eyelet inside the centre of the cap. The fuse wire is simply trapped between the end cap and body. The manufacturing standard of these fuses is particularly poor. They do not have any approval marks, such as ASTA, Nemko, or a BSI Kitemark. They are also marked red, which should be used only for 3A fuses. The 20A fuses we purchased are marked with ‘BS 1362’ and have the manufacturer's name 'Xingguang’. The fuse link barrel shall be marked in red for 3 A and brown for 13 A for all other ratings the marking shall be black. For use in plugs, the preferred rated currents are 3 A and 13 A."īS 1362 also specifies the information that should be on the fuse and also the colour.Įach fuse link shall be clearly and indelibly marked with the following:ġ) the manufacturer’s name or identifying mark,Ģ) the number of this British Standard, i.e. “The rated current may be any value not exceeding 13A. Following on from our previous article on counterfeit fuses, we were recently made aware of 20A plug top fuses being sold on Ebay.īS 1362, the British Standard for plug fuses, states:
